OUGD602 - Personal Branding and Promotion - Evaluation

This module has given a much more knowledge in areas of interest for after graduation . When approaching Alete couture & Euphoria events I noticed I had a keen motive in creating a strong business plan, setting out tasks in order to move forward. Starting something with a friend out side of uni became an exciting experience for me. It brought out the best, allowing us to take that extra mile to have a unique concept. This module has proved effective in having an understanding of how you approach the starting of a business. Recognising costs, loans and profits made within the business.

When approaching the creative report I came to some difficulty because my interests weren't the same as others on the course, to the point of leaving it till last minute.

During this module I’ve learnt a lot about myself especially in having an understanding of what skills I’ve improved on from the first year. PPP has allowed me to come out my comfort zone when exploring my particular style and finally understand what I want to persue after graduationg. In comparison to the first year my preparation, confidence & time management has improved massively. For in the first year my anxiety when doing presentations was unbearable. But being more prepared having an efficient amount of work to talk about has given me a better attitude when approaching the presentation. I’ve realised the areas which need improvement such as, engaging more within the industry, attending more presentations like ‘Future Rising’ Most of all this module has given me the confidence in my work, enabling me to seek client work,

Alete Couture - Clothing Brand - Structure

Clothing Line Structure

Part 1

Step 1: Create a clear business plan.

Plan out how I intend to manage the clothing line as well as having a brief description of future plans with the clothing line.

Business plan

To start off with I’ll need an estimate of £3000 to launch. With these funds I’ll spread it across,

6 Hoodies | 6 Tee’s | 6 Sweatshirts (3x small & 3x medium)

2 Models

Website

Web domain registration

Produced garments for friends & Instagram Influencers to promote

Promotional Material e.g guerrilla stickers, Business cards, Flyer

In between the Launch create a hype of the clothing, Have friends wear the brand around the location of start up. Get the name and brand image out there through the use of Guerrilla advertising and social media .

Once establishing that the brand is selling the idea would be to move onto producing a larger bulk & to offer something different cloths wise. The plan then would be to start designing our
own garments an get them cut by a fashion designer. It would be beneficial to consider taking onboard someone within the fashion industry.

As the brand progresses to start looking deeper into the quality of my image will benefit in creating a much more unique image.

The overall outcome of my brand will hopefully consist of a team covering all areas of marketing, production. To provide a quality customer service which from the help of the team will ensure its to perfect standards.

Step 2. Company’s projected financials

Will I need to ask for a bank loan (SBA loan)
Cost of materials, manufacturing, supplies, marketing, advertising
Costs for the year

Material

Spending time on researching into the more cost effective manufacturers but to ensure the quality is to good standard, baring in mind that the price may rise but it’ll allow the image to remain worthy.
It would be beneficial if the printers were locally to avoid delivery/VAT charges to maximise profit.

Fabrics
Garment Suppliers
Embroidery
Tee Printer

Find a manufacturer that can pattern cut and produce

Target Market

Age Range - 18 - 26

The brand is to represent quality and high class so I’ll be aiming to reach out to young - adults who follow a minimal/sophisticated style. The brand will eventually be available in both genders further down the line, starting off with male clothing.

The brand will be available to females further down the line.

Step 3. Pulling down a salary.

Understanding that profit will not entirely be made during the 4 seasons. Taking into consideration that I’ll spend more than I’ll earn during that time. A possibility of being able to expand with funding from angel investors, celebrities and pre orders with store accounts.

Step 4. Research market.

Who is the current and future competition, Who is my target market. How much will i be able to sell my designs for in retail and wholesale levels.

Get feedback
Talk to store owners and potential customers
Get a part time retail job at a store that caters to my target market.
See what the store is buying and what the customers are buying.
Find examples of clothing that is similar to what I'm going to design and learn how much they sell for.

Step 5. Straighten out legal obligations.

Potentially hire a lawyer to act as a consultant

Part 2

Step 1. Need of employees.

Hiring help to work on my clothing line, what sort of assistance will I need and how many hours per week will I require, an how much the salary would be.

Production in cutting, stitching etc.
Will I want my clothing to be produced locally, organically or abroad for less money but lower quality.
Will I want a retail location.

Step 2. Build the brand.

Making some aesthetic decisions, How will I set up my brand that will define what people associate with the clothing line.

Choose a name that will represent my clothing line, making sure its unique and recognisable.
My brand name and company name can be different.

Step 3. Design a logo

Brainstorm and develop various logos that’ll be effective, The logo chosen will represent my clothing line so its important that the logo complements the brand. Looking into registering for a trademark (jurisdiction)

Part 3.

Step 1. Design the cloths.

Step 2. Design according to season.

Fabrics

Polyester

- For clothing, spandex is usually mixed with cotton or polyester, and accounts for a small percentage of the final fabric, which therefore retains most of the look and feel of the other fibres

Jersey

- Heavier-weight jerseys work well for dresses, skirts, sweatshirts, tunics, jumpers and such. Most people choose heavier-weight jersey for its added strength and warmth, and a heavier weight material will also help to create a garment with more structure.

Euphøria - Tech/House Event Planner - Staff management & Costs

I created a excel document to help me keep track of the staff management and costs for the night.

Euphøria - Tech/House Event Planner - Staff interaction

Networking

For the night, I was in need of staff to promote the launch through their social media. So I spread the words using my previous event manager title to recruit students around Leeds.

This was a tedious experience as people did not respond quickly and time cutting short. And when I did receive responses, only a selected few would actually put the work in.

This taught me that it's important to constantly recruit, know more about the individuals and give them targets / incentives to work towards.

OUGD602 - Personal Branding and Promotion - Branding

Looking back at my personal branding from last year, I felt that the visual identity reflects my personality well, so I decided to keep the overall aesthetic the same, but update the back information.

I no longer feel that the title 'graphic designer' suits my position for life after graduation as I am versatile in my skill set. For example, I not only work as a freelance designer, I am an event manager for Mint Club and the Co-founder of Euphoria, my own techno night located in Leeds. I am also networking with people within the fashion industry to launch my own clothing brand (see extended practice brief for examples).

Below are examples of my business card, front and back...

I designed the layout of my portfolio to reflect the business black and white theme and continued with a san-serif typeface, to keep it consistent with my design look rather than Alete's serif as it's still a working progress.

Euphøria - Tech/House Event Planner - Event Response

Successes of the night:

  • Costs had been met
  • Door count was more than expected
  • Dj's interacted really well with the audience
  • Buzzing atmosphere
  • The pressure was good on my shoulders
  • The collaboration with the videographer resulted to a successful extended brief
Below are some responses from people after the event launch. I am really pleased that it kicked off this well. I am now planning to host another night with Mint!
